I've already mentioned once or twice that we're expecting a baby, so I'm gonna write a few posts in this topic. Starting with today's one, where I'll show you a weird tradition about pregnancy. It's called haraobi...

Japán tavaszköszöntő - Setsubun in Japan -
Japánban minden évben február 3-án ünneplik a tavasz kezdetét.
Japan celebrates the start of the Spring every year on the 3rd of February. This celebration is called "Setsubun". Unfortunately it's not a work holiday, but as it's very close to the Chinese New Year, there are a few funny traditions connected to it. And now that this year we happened to stay at home instead of going on a trip somewhere, I got the chance to try out one or two...

Újévi jókívánságok - New year's cards - 年賀状
Regarding the new year, I've already written some posts about the first shrine visit and various other traditions as well. However, there's one important thing that I haven't mentioned so far: sending new year's wishes. I've been left out of this loop so far, but this year I managed to get into it, after receiving a new year's card from the real estate company that's building our new apartment...

Issho mochi -
I had the chance to take part in another Japanese tradition the other day, called... Well, it's name is in the title of this post. The Japanese have a lot of events and festivals / celebrations directly connected to the health and well-being of children. One of them, coming in the early stages of a child's life (a bit after Okuizome), is "Issho mochi"...

Mit együnk Niigatában? - What to eat in Niigata? -
And as I promised, here is the post about the food. :) When I went to Niigata the last time, I was just randomly eating stuff, but this time I had some experts with me, who had been training their tasting buds beforehand for the full experience of Niigata's specialties. Thanks to them, I had a chance to taste these delicious dishes too...

Az őzek városa - The city of the deer -
Ebben a posztban Japán első fővárosáról lesz szó.
This time I'll be writing about the first capitol of Japan. Which is about a 45-min train ride from Kyoto, so we added it to the schedule of my family's visit while we were at it. Besides the ancient temples and shrines, it is most famous for the roughly 1200 deer (this data is from 2015) roaming the streets freely and asking for food all the time. With a population of about 360 000 people, today's topic is Nara...

Torii -
Most megint egy jellegzetes japán dolog következik. Róluk lesz szó ebben a posztban...
This time I'll be writing about another very Japanese thing. I believe all of you have already seen gates similar to the one in the photo below (either in person, or on the Internet, at least). This is the "torii" (鳥居, or "bird perch"). And it will be the topic of today's post...

Okuizome -
Most egy újabb érdekes japán szokásról fogok írni, amivel nemrég sikerült találkoznom.
This time I'll be writing about another interesting Japanese tradition that I experienced the other day. In the past, the death rate of infants was very high here, similarly to most other countries. So it was a big deal if someone reached the hundred-day milestone, and the family celebrated it. Of course, the life expectancy of infants has increased quite a bit since then, but the celebration remains to this day. And it is called okuizome...

Fehér évszak - White season -
Egyébként biztos tudtam volna találóbb címet is találni a posztnak, de a "fehér évszak" japán változatának (白い季節 - shiroi kisetsu) a csengése nagyon tetszik, így más szóba se jöhetett... :)
In Tokyo, snow is considered a rare phenomenon (the 5 cm this year is a 4-year record). In the north, or on the coastal area of the Sea of Japan, or in the Japanese Alps, it's a whole different story though. The bus tour briefly mentioned in my previous post targeted the two latter areas. I've wanted to see the mountains in winter, and a dip in an onsen in this season has also been among my plans for some time now. By the way, I most likely could've found a more appropriate title for the post, but the Japanese version of "white season" (白い季節 - shiroi kisetsu) has a very nice ring to it, so there was no way I'd choose anything else... :)

Ha levelet kapsz - When you receive a letter -
One of the things in Japan that get on my nerves the most is the low efficiency of communication. The language itself compresses information very efficiently (mostly thanks to the kanjis), but the people use it completely the wrong way a lot of the times. :P You see, thanks to the overthinking and overuse of politeness, if someone wants to say something, they'll never get to the end of the sentence. I've experienced this a lot of times, the most recent being a letter that I got the other day. So with the help of said letter, I'll show you what I'm talking about...

Sanrinbo -
Az utóbbi időben alkalmam nyílt belekóstolni a japán babonákba, amik behálózzák az élet minden területét. Ezek közül jön most a számomra eddigi legfurább: a sanrinbo. :) )...
Recently I've got my chance at getting in touch with a few Japanese superstitions, that are literally present in all situations of the everyday life. And now I'll talk about the one that I've found the weirdest of all so far: the sanrinbo. You see, I moved to a new apartment in another part of Tokyo not long ago, and the originally planned day of moving was a sanrinbo day, so I had to postpone the whole thing. (As I've learned from my girlfriend. :) )...

Mit lehet enni Okinawán? - What can you eat on Okinawa? -
I've become rather busy lately (once again), but I managed to find some time to peel another layer of skin off my trip to Okinawa. :P I mean I haven't really talked about the foods there, so I might as well do it now. There are two main things that influence the eating habits there: firstly, it's located rather far from the main islands of Japan, so they have several kinds of fish that you can't eat in Tokyo. (Although I didn't really notice that in real life...) Secondly, a lot of Americans live on the island, which has a great impact on the available food types...

Városnézés Nahában - Sightseeing in Naha -
As I wrote last time, during my vacation on Okinawa, I spent most of my time in Naha, the capitol, so I thought I'd write a little about the things I did there too. Of course, lazing around on the beach is hardly an interesting topic for bystanders, so I'll skip that part. Instead, I'll show you what I saw during my sightseeing of the city...

Busszal Okinawán - Okinawa by bus -
:) A legnagyobb szigetét egyébként Okinawának hívják. Ahol van egy Okinawa nevű város is. :D A fővárosa viszont Naha, én is ott töltöttem az időm legnagyobb részét...
Okinawa is a group of islands (or rather three groups) belonging to Japan far to the south-west from the main islands. The most important thing about it is that schoolgirls in animes usually spend their vacation here. :D Therefore I've been planning to pay my visit too for a long time, and in this September, I finally got here! :) The main island is called Okinawa by the way. And there's a city called Okinawa on it. :D The capitol is the city of Naha though, and that's where I spent most of my time...

Maccsa - Matcha -
Green tea (see the title for the Japanese spelling) has a long tradition in Japan. But I guess that's not much news. The Japanese also have a traditional tea ceremony, like the English, and if you stay at a hotel, some tealeaves and a kettle are usually waiting for you in your room. But this time, I'm gonna talk about a slightly different topic. I'm gonna talk about what happens if the very popular green tea meets the consumer society... :D

Japán spagetti: udon - Japanese spaghetti: udon -
(Ezekből a legtöbb persze a hagyományos "valamilyen lében úszik
a tészta" megoldás.) A legutóbb például a kollégákkal találtunk egy
helyet, ahol curry-s udon-t adnak. Az alábbi képen is ez látható
rizzsel, mert ebédmenüben volt. :) Itt egyébként a pincér ajánlására a
The third kind of spaghetti is called "udon", and this is the thickest of the three. It's made from wheat flour too, and there are a lot of variations in a lot of restaurant chains. (Of course most of these are regular "the pasta is floating in some soup" setups.) For example, we found a place making curry udon with my colleagues the other day. You can see it in the picture below, with some rice as it was a lunch menu. :) By the way, following the waiter's suggestion, this time we poured the remaining soup on the rice when we ate the pasta part and ate it like that. :) It was very delicious...

Japán spagetti: ramen - Japanese spaghetti: ramen -
And I'm back with the second kind of pasta: the ramen, that's probably available in Europe too. It has Chinese origins, but it's become so widespread in Japan that even the Chinese have Chinese ramen and Japanese ramen too. :D (As I've learned from one of my colleagues, who knows a few things about these things. ;) ) It's made from wheat flour, and it's a bit thicker and more wavy than soba. As for its name, the Chinese word for pasta is "men", and for that particular action of making it so long and thin is "ra"...

Japán spagetti: soba - Japanese spaghetti: soba -
In other words: how to piss off two nations in one blow. :D But anyway, I really like the pasta meals here, so I thought I'd write a bit about them. (Three posts in one go, since I couldn't fit everything into a single one.) Mostly because some of them go very well with the summer. :) And I haven't written too much about the random foods here anyway. In any case, the Japanese pasta is infinitely long, so it reminds me of spaghetti. I can't help it...

A nyár kabalája - The mascot of summer -
I don't know whether the Japanese summer has a cute mascot or not (I'm sure it has), but in case it doesn't have one, the cicada (called "semi" in Japanese) has great odds to grab this title. As soon as it gets warm (around the start of July), they also appear, for the greater joy of everyone. And they stay with us until about the middle of autumn. As for its size, you can get some idea from the picture below. But don't worry, I stole the photo from the Internet, there's no way I'd hold one in my hand like this. If it came closer than 1 meter to me, I'd run away screaming for my life, like a ten-year-old girlie... :D

Manza Onsen -
And I'm back with with the onsen topic! In Japan, the volcanic activity is quite lively (well, I guess no surprise there). It causes a few unwanted things, like earthquakes and tsunamis, but it has a very nice side-effect too: thermal water can get to the surface very easily. :) Thanks to that, the country has a lot of hot springs, and these onsens have been very popular for several centuries. Manza Onsen, where we spent one evening and morning the other day, is one of the many tiny onsen villages in the mountains (to be honest, it's not more than a few hotels built alongside each other)...
